I hope you are all well and safe and had a wonderful end to June!
For my birthday i added to my collection of self help/spiritual books. Now I understand that this is a topic that is not for everyone, however it is something that over the last year or so i have tried to educate myself in more. It is also something that I will continue to learn more about as at least for me it gives me yet another means of taking control of my life.
One of the books that I picked up and then read within literally a day was She Believed She Could, So She Did. A Modern Woman’s Guide to Life by Sam Lacey. I just knew that I would end up talking about it on here at some point and I finally got round to scheduling this in.
This book is broken down into four sections and in between is full of empowerment and quotes to inspire even the most uninspired person. This is a slightly different kind of book review for me because it is not fiction so i am going to talk about the four sections and what I loved along with sharing my favourite quotes that feature within this book.
Part One: Who Run The World?
This section is one of my favourites as it is so inspiring. It talks all about women that have had some impact on history whether it be through sports, fashion, NASA and so much more. There were so many inspirational women talked about in this section and facts that I did not know about. If you ever feel like you are stuck in a rut and have no inspiration I highly recommend just picking up this book amd reading all about the most incredible women and the things they have achieved. If they can do it, what is stopping you? (I say this knowing that I am right behind you all with the self-doubt) I swear it gives you the push you need even just to make the smallest step towards what you want to achieve.
My favourite fact i did not know about was the first man on the moon… we are all taught how incredible it was for the first man on the moon and what an achievement it is for him to have done so. At school we learn all about it however what we are very rarely taught is about the team of incredible women that were working behind the scenes to make this happen. For example in 1962 NASA Mathematician Katherine Johnson worked on the detailed calculations and equations needed to successfully complete astronaut John Glenn’s journey into orbit. (I think we can chalk this up to a bloody awesome achievement for women everywhere.)
My favourite quote from this section has to be ” Well- Behaved Women Seldom Make History.” – Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
Part Two: Be Your Own Woman:
In this section it talks all about how awesome it is when you can stand tall and let people know who you are.Taking control of your independence. We are made to be different. The temptation to compare yourself to others especially today in our social media controlled generation is so large. This chapter reminds us that actually it is pretty awesome to step away from trying to be the same as other people.
Being different is what makes us unique and being unique is something we all take for granted. Some of my favourite people in life whether it be friends, family or celebrities are the ones who embrace their uniqueness and use it to have their voices heard. Now this is not to say I have this down because I promise you that it is not true. However it is certainly something I wish to work on.
My favourite page of this section is the one which talks about the importance of saying no. Which is something I know is an area of my life I need to work on. I know that setting boundaries is something that I struggle with so I found it really interesting to read about how learning to say no to a situation which is likely to make you feel bad or anxious, or you just do not want to do, gives a whole new feeling of empowerment. And I am all for empowerment especially when it comes to your own life.
My favourite quote from this section comes from one of my favourite actresses Emma Stone and she says “You’re only human once. You live once and life is wonderful. So eat the damned red velvet cupcake.”
Part Three: Achieve and Succeed:
This section is a little like what I would call tough love. If you want the truth and brutal honesty… this would be it. From career to relationships it discusses everything. However it gives you a little honest reminder that nothing is going to change unless you put the effort into making it change. Do not like your current job… find your dream role and make it happen. Stuck in bad relationships.. admit you deserve better and are worth so much more. Make the changes. Life is magical but without some effort from you it is just not going to happen.
My favourite page in this section is the little page on mind over matter. This section of the book is one that I love not only because reading the title had me singing Anthony Ramos (mind over matter) also yes the obsession is a little intense. But because it is a brutal reminder that it is mind over matter, the things you convince yourself you cannot do, what if I told you with a little change in mindset this is something that could be achieved. What if I told you that your way of thinking about yourself is what talks you out of doing the things you would be good at. This section reminds you to take that leap of faith. I believe in you. You should believe in yourself to.
My favourite quote from this section is “how can you expect anyone to believe in you and your ideas if you don’t believe in them yourself?”- Kelly Hoppen
Part Four: Give a little respect:
This section talks about respecting yourself and learning to love and embrace everything that makes you, who you are. (this section is one that I myself a currently working on. So I loved it a little more than the others).
My favourite page in this section talks about the power of positive thinking. This is something I have often thought a lot about. What if we turned the negative thoughts on their head and used them to create something positive! What would happen then? In this section they talk about how we can use this technique to increase your sense of self-worth, reduce stress and help exude that positive energy. Helping us increase our vibrations.
My favourite quote from this section is “Define success on your own terms, Achieve it by your own rules, and build a life you’re proud to live”- Anne Sweeney.
