Small Business Spotlight: Señero

Happy June!

I hope you are well!

It is June… you know what that means… its officially the best month ever. (yes its my birthday month). I am kicking off what hopefully will be a month full of love, laughter and magic, by sharing a little love/magic to one of my favourite small businesses. Not only has working with them being an utter delight but Ibukun is one of the most wonderful, friendly and awe-inspiring people I have ever had the pleasure to speak to.

*Keep your eye peeled for a future post you will know I was kindly gifted one of their necklaces… to tell my story and I am obsessed*

Let’s get to know them a little better:

What made you choose jewellery to tell your story?

Jewellery has always been a means of expression for me. During the pandemic, despite being dressed in pyjamas bottoms I constantly found a way to uplift my mood by wearing the jewellery friends gifted me with. It made me feel close to them even when far.

How/when did Señero start?

Señero officially started in August 2022, in my bedroom actually 😆

To make sure the business was viable, I spent time creating a business plan, researching the best materials I could use to ensure our jewellery is waterproof and sweatproof (this was essential as I was tired of jewellery that fades or turns green), thinking through the packaging design, the seamless user experience for online shopping, inventory and so many other details. I was keen to ensure I had the fundamental structures set up to run the business successfully.

Could you tell me a little bit about your story and the motivation behind Senero?

I have always loved to tell stories; at work I’m a data storyteller, outside work I tell stories through poems, articles, and curating content which made me think “why don’t I inspire others to tell their stories as well”. Stories have always been told, with some of the earliest evidence seen in cave drawings from 30,000 years ago. In today’s world, stories are synonymous with written words but what if words aren’t enough?
This question inspired me to create Señero, What if we could share our stories through another medium and form genuine relationships in the process? What if Señero did the talking?

What is something that you would like people to know about Senero?

I’ve always imagined Señero to be a brand that empowers its customers. This goes past the physical product, but the ability of the jewellery to inspire its wearer. To be your authentic self means you have to own your story however unpopular it is.

How do you think Jewellery impacts the lives of others?

I believe your jewellery says a lot about you before you’re even able to introduce yourself to others. People can depict your personality by looking at the jewellery you wear.

What is your favourite book/Film if you do not have a favourite book?

Stay with me by Ayobami Adebayo is my favorite book. I remember picking it up and not able to put it down until I finished it.

What is the best advice you have received?

Hmm…it’s hard to pick from all the wise words I’ve heard over the years but knowing how important my spirituality is to me I’ll say Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he’ll make your path straight”. I chose it as the best advice because I’ve found so much peace despite the uncertainty all around, by daily learning to trust God.

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you travel to and why?

I’ll definitely travel to Iceland, I’ve always wanted to see the Northern lights in person!

I hope you loved getting to know Senero and Ibukun as much as I did.

Love Always,

Gee xoxo
